Take the controls.
Go anywhere.

We believe mature students should be empowered to design the educational experience that best serves them and their desired futures. Open World Academy believes self-determination and curiosity should drive learning.

By focusing on students who have a strong sense of self, we can take the elements of a typical alternative high school and forge them with the freedom and power that adult learners take for granted.

Explore the world.

  • The Open World Classroom

Open World Academy leverages the power of having the world’s information in your pocket.

Learning is not confined by four walls. It happens anywhere.

“Open world” usually refers to a game mechanic that lets you choose your own objectives and explore freely, as opposed to games that are structured and linear.

And that’s what Open World Academy promises: student-led learning and the power to choose your own adventure.

  • Powered by you

Self-determination describes a human deciding what to learn and how, deciding where to go and going.

Open World Academy promises to give students something most adults take for granted: control. You’ll decide what your learning should be and where it will take you.

Whether you’re someone who wants to use their time in school engaging their interests or someone who wants to focus on quickly earning a credential so they can be qualified for college, you’ll have the power- the power of self-determination.

  • Without boundaries

Planning a journey with our project-based framework gives you the freedom to pull course content from an infinite number of places.

An Open World Learning Coach will help you create independent study that earns your diploma while you satisfy your curiosities, practice your passions, or prepare for your next chapter.

For example, you could participate in the numerous classes that Ivy League colleges have made available to everyone, or pick up some resumé-worthy certifications from Apple, Google, Microsoft, Adobe and so.

With our PBL framework and your determination, anything is possible.

FAQs

  • Yes, and we exceed the State standards for private schools.

The Texas Education Agency has certified founder John Cuba Lewis as a highly qualified principal.

Additionally, TEA has certified all Learning Coaches as highly qualified teacher(s).

We are a small team, but our collective TEA teaching certifications are in the following domains: Math, English, Fine Arts, Technology, Journalism, Social Education, and ESL.

  • In accordance with State law, an Open World Academy high school diploma qualifies students to enroll in Texas colleges, exactly like a diploma from a public high school.

In accordance with federal law, Open World Academy graduates are eligible for federal financial aid college, just like a public school graduate.

But, no, we are not yet accredited.

    Why not?

We are a brand new school, and until we have a track record to evaluate, accreditation is just not possible. We will need to acquire a few year’s worth of data.

By July 1, Open World Academy will be a member of the American Montessori Society, and our goal is to begin the accreditation process within the year.

    Does it matter?

Accreditation is a nonissue for high school students wanting to graduate and attend a Texas college.

  • Option One: Tuition is set at $200 per month with a two month minimum.
This will be the best option for most students.

Option Two: Tuition is set at $400 for the first course and $200 for each subsequent course.
This option is for people who love well-define perimeters or know they will be working at a slower than normal pace.

If we know how many credits you’re transferring in, we can give you an estimate of the total cost.

As a general rule of thumb, a student working at a traditional pace will be finishing a few courses per month.

A motivated students could earn much more than that.

  • STAAR sucks.

In spirit, we join the thousands of rowdy Texas teachers who have marched to our Capitol in protest of “standardized” testing.

Generally speaking, colleges don’t care about STAAR scores and neither does Open World Academy.

As a private school, we are free and proud to spend our time preparing for tests that actually matter, the ones colleges use for admission.

  • There are no application deadlines.

You start can start in the middle of a semester.

Likewise, you don’t have to wait for the end of the semester to receive a grade.

When you’re done, congratulations, you’re done.

  • We don’t have a scholarship fund. However, we also don’t want cost to be the reason a student doesn’t come. Depending on the individual need and where we are in terms of capacity, it might be possible for us to remove amok financial barriers.
